Christiana Figueres, urges Ambition from Oil Industry in Response to Open Letter from Six Oil Majors

June 29, 2015- Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, has answered a letter of six leading oil and gas companies thanking them for getting behind a universal climate agreement in Paris in December, while urging them towards higher short-term and long-term ambition.

This follows a letter sent to Ms Figueres and France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on 29 May by the six companies, Shell, BP, ENI, Total, BG Group and Statoil, in which they committed to taking faster climate action if governments provide stronger carbon pricing.

For years, oil industry have been fighting carbon pricing, while now that pricing seems to have been evaporated they have realized that carbon pricing is the most cost effective way to mitigate climate change. It will be interesting if other industries pick up on this experience and avoid commiting the same errors.
