August 4th, 2015- Washington, DC
President Barack Obama presented the Clean Energy Plan that proposes reducing emissions of CO2 and encourages investment in renewable energy. The reduction proposed is about one third of actual emissions in 15 years.
Since that December 2009 when Obama was presented at the international meeting on climate change (COP 15) in Copenhagen and ran away with an arrangement that has not satisfied the public opinion but signaled a change in the hegemonic European leadership of the talks, until today, Obama has never ceased to demonstrate that for him climate change is an important issue on the agenda.
The Clean Energy Plan assigns each state the power to establish its emissions reduction target for coal plants. States will be responsible for creating their own plans to achieve the reduction requirements and must submit their initial versions in 2016 and in 2018 their final versions. One point to note is that is the first time that companies will be rewarded for early actions, recognizing the importance of time in climate change.
This decision taken by Obama is a step towards the next meeting of Climate Change (COP 21) to be held in Paris, where it is expected that a comprehensive agreement is signed to limit the increase in global temperature to 2 ° C.
